More information Gestionar cookiesColorFabb is a Dutch company dedicated to the development and manufacture of filaments for FDM/FFF 3D printing, standing out for its constant research to improve standard products and develop new products, such as LW-ASA, LW-PLA and TPU Varioshore.
LW-ASA is a filament for FDM/FFF 3D printers with a unique property compared to other 3D printing filaments, when extruded it can increase its volume up to almost 2.5 times and reduce its weight considerably by varying the density.
This innovative filament from ColorFabb is made of ASA, Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate, a thermoplastic that combines mechanical and UV resistance. LW-ASA shares some properties with this material, such as its resistance to water and adverse outdoor conditions while maintaining its initial appearance and colour. This filament also inherits from ASA its resistance to high temperatures, withstanding temperatures up to 96ºC.
In addition to the properties described above, the LW-ASA filament stands out for its ability to vary its volume and reduce its density by varying the flow of FDM/FFF 3D printing when extruded. Initially, the density of the filament is 1.07 g/cm3, but if it is printed with a flow rate of 40%, the material expands to its maximum capacity, obtaining a density close to 0.43 g/cm3.
In this way, the user can print the same part several times by varying the printing flow and obtain parts that appear to be the same but have different masses.
For both LW-ASA Black and LW-ASA Natural, it should be noted that changing the print flow changes the colour of the material. By decreasing the print flow, the printed piece gets a matt appearance. However, when printing with a higher print flow, the printed piece gets a deeper and more intense colour, both for black and natural.
With LW-ASA, the user can create areas with greater or lesser density in the same piece, varying the print flow and being resistant to high temperatures and UV rays.
This material is ideal for applications where weight and weather resistance are a priority, for example in the UAV or model aircraft sector. Users can develop and produce their own lightweight, UV-resistant components without compromising their parts to high weight or ageing due to adverse environmental factors.
Among the applications that can be developed with this filament, the following stand out:
LW-ASA has a high resistance to high temperatures and UV rays. In addition, this innovative ASA-based filament has the advantage of being able to vary the density depending on the print flow.

The printing requirements of LW-ASA are similar to those of a conventional ASA filament. Like ASA, LW-ASA is more prone to warping than other materials such as PLA or PETG.
When printing LW-ASA, an FDM/FFF 3D printer with a heated bed that reaches 90 - 100 ºC and an extrusion temperature of 240 - 260 ºC should be used.
It is recommended to use an FDM 3D printer with a closed chamber or, if not available, to try to avoid air currents that could affect the 3D printing result. In addition, ColorFabb recommends not to use the layer fan and to create an outline around the part to protect it during the 3D printing process, better known as skirt. In this link you can read more tips like this.
To reduce the warping effect (which causes the first layer of the part to detach from the hot base of the FDM/FFF 3D printer), it is recommended to apply specific adhesives such as Magigoo or 3DLac.
Finally, it is recommended to use printers with a HEPA filter, as the vapours given off during the 3D printing process of the LW-ASA filament can be harmful to the user.
