The xCE-Black resin is a 3D printing resin resembling cyanate ester and characterized by high stiffness and excellent resistance to high temperatures and chemicals. The xCE-Black resin was developed by Nexa 3D, an American manufacturer of resin 3D printing equipment and materials, with the goal of providing a strong, durable and resistant resin for demanding applications.

The xCE-Black resin resembles the aesthetics of injection-molded nylons, polyamides, polyimides and polyesters. Parts 3D printed with the xCE-Black resin demonstrate excellent isotropic properties and exhibit long-term environmental stability. Accelerated QUV weathering testing conducted by Nexa 3D's material partner has shown that the mechanical properties of parts printed with the xCE-Black resin do not significantly change over a period of 336 hours when subjected to conditions simulating months-long damage caused by sunlight, rain and dew. The detailed results can be found in the Datasheet in the Downloads section.

Furthermore, tests were carried out by Nexa 3D to check the behavior of samples 3D printed (and cured) with the xCE-Black resin when exposed to various chemicals. The samples were weighed bedore submersion and after 24 hours of submersion (after wiping them dry to remove excess water). The results of this experiment for each chemical can be seen in the table below.

Chemical Results (weight increase)
Tap water < 0.23 %
Salt water (5 w% NaCl) 0.39 %
Ethanol 0.47 %
Dipropylene glycol methyl ether 0.23 %
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) 0.31 %
Tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether 0.16 %
Diesel < 0.1 %
Petrol < 0.1 %
Bleach (5w% NaOCl) < 0.1 %
Methyl Ethyl Keton (MEK) < 0.1 %
Vinegar (8 w %) < 0.1 %
Hydrochloric Acid (0.1 M pH1) < 0.1 %
Sodium Hydroxide (1 M pH14) < 0.1 %
Table 1: The effect of submersion in chemicals on the weight of a part 3D printed with the xCE-Black resin. Source: Nexa 3D.

As shown in the table, the weight of the parts did not increase significantly. The only effect worth mentioning is the softening of the outer surface of the sample submerged in sodium hydroxide.

The excellent mechanical properties exhibited by the xCE-Black resin combined with its chemical and thermal resistance make this material ideal for the 3D printing of high-performance end use parts for the automotive sector (under-the-hood uses), for electronics, automation, robotics, industrial uses and functional injection molding tools. Combined with the ultrafast Nexa 3D printers, the xCE-Black material can produce one-off parts or large series in a matter of hours, thus agilizing workflows and shortening lead time.

Certain precautions must be taken when working with 3D printing resins. The user must ensure that the working space is adequately ventilated, and that protective goggles, gloves and garments are worn at all times. The xCE-Black resin should be stored in a tightly closed container/resin vat to avoid resin deterioration due to UV exposure. The container/vat should be kept in a cool, well ventilated area away from heat, sparks and open flame.

Parts 3D printed with the Nexa 3D xCE-Black resin will achieve their specific properties only after being subjected to post-processing by washing and curing. If applicable, the support structures must be removed from the part before curing and the part must be washed. Nexa3D recommends 2 wash intervals (2 minutes each) in IPA alcohol or xClean. It is recommended to use two buckets in the cleaning process, especially when working with multiple resin colors, to prevent resin residue from sticking to the part.

Once washed, the parts 3D printed with the xCE-Black resin must be dried and then cured either with the help of an LED or wide spectrum lamp, or in the Nexa 3D Wash+Cure station developed especially for the washing and curing of parts 3D printed on the XiP 3D printer. The recommended washing, drying and curing times can be consulted on the manufacturer's website for each Nexa 3D resin.

More information on how to print and post-process the Nexa 3D resins can be found here.
