KeyPrint is a line of 3D printing resins for the dental industry developed by KeyStone Industries. Their materials are characterized by high quality, affordability, versatility and safety. One of the dental resins from their portfolio is the biocompatible KeySplint Hard photopolymer designed for the 3D printing of orthodontic and dental appliances such as bite planes, mouthguards, nightguards, snoring appliances, splints, repositioners, and retainers. The KeySplint Hard resin produces biocompatible medical devices, FDA cleared in the USA, health licensed in Canada, CE marked (class IIa), and BPA, MMA and phthalate free.

One of the most outstanding features of the KeySplint Hard resin is the lifespan of the orthodontic device 3D-printed with it. Most similar resins on the market prove too brittle to withstand severe bruxism. The KeySplint Hard resin, however, is extremely abrasion-resistant, stain resistant and hard, demonstrating wear and fatigue resistance without tearing or cracking, thus outperforming competitive materials. A study on the wear of the KeySplint Hard resin can be found in the Downloads section.

The KeySplint Hard resin also proves extremely helpful in cases where tooth immobilization is needed after injury as it prevents undesired movements due to its rigidity. The rigidity also allows for finer details and thinner segments in more complex devices, broadening the range of dental 3D applications that can be achieved with this resin. Another successful application of the KeySplint Hard resin was in the 3D printing of highly durable intraoral communications devices for emergency workers and military personnel. A detailed care guide for orthodontic devices 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin can be found in the Downloads section.

A common practice aimed at improving the surface finish of splints and guards is polishing. The edges and occlusal surfaces of splints 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin can be polished with the help of the KeyPolish polishing kit.

Polishing the intaglio surface is not recommended as it can adversely impact the fit of the printed device. A complete polishing guide for this resin can be found in the Downloads section and a tutorial video is available in the Usage Tips section.

The KeySplint Hard resin was designed for DLP printers utilizing wavelengths between 385-405 nm, while most similar resins available on the market only operate in the lower range of wavelengths. This makes the KeySplint Hard resin usable on many printers, for example the UniZ Slash 2 and Phrozen Sonic XL 4K 2022. A full list of validated equipment is available in the Downloads section.

Thanks to its strength, resistance and ease of printing and post-processing, the KeySplint Hard resin significantly outperforms competitive 3D printing resins available on the market. The simple and reliable workflow will yield parts that stand the test of time but the potential uses of the KeySplint Hard resin go beyond orthodontic devices. The KeySplint Hard resin is not only biocompatible but also positively rated by dental healthcare professionals.

Before using the resin, the user should thoroughly study the product instructions, as well as the safety and technical datasheets available in the Downloads section. It must be remembered that dedicated accessories (resin tank, build platform, curing station) must be used for the KeySplint Hard resin (Downloads section). The dedicated accessories must not mix with any other resins to ensure the biocompatibility of the parts 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin.

The KeySplint Hard resin should always be stored in a cool, dry place (15-30 °C) and away from light, as it may cause curing of the resin and failed prints. In order to ensure successful prints, the bottle should be well shaken 1 hour before use and the resin should be tempered to around 23 ºC. If bubbles are present in the resin, they should be removed with a clean spatula prior to printing. It is a good practice to filter resin that has been in the tank for a while in order to avoid failed prints.

Proper personal protective equipment should be worn at all times when handling the KeySplint Hard resin and uncured printed parts to avoid burns and other injuries. Protective gloves and garments as well as face protection should be used.

Video 1: How to wash parts 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin. Source: KeyPrint.

Parts 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin require washing and curing in order to perform their function. The parts should be washed twice in a clean IPA alcohol (>97% purity) bath just like shown in video 1, and then dried with compressed air. Any residual resin will be highly noticeable and it will not dry under the compressed air. This residue should be removed completely by repeating the bath and drying process. The total IPA alcohol exposure should not exceed 5 minutes as the parts may start to degrade. As far as curing, the recommended curing parameters can be consulted on the manufacturer’s website. The finished medical device resulting from following this validated post-processing workflow is safe, biocompatible, and effective for its intended use.

In order for the orthodontic device 3D printed with the KeySplint Hard resin to have an aesthetically pleasing surface finish, polishing should be done just like shown in video 2. A complete polishing guide can be found in the Downloads section.
