Build plates in FDM 3D printers may need replacement due to wear and tear caused by repeated use, leading to decreased adhesion and print quality. Over time, the surface may become scratched or damaged, impacting print bed leveling and adherence of filament. These original replacement buildplates for the Bambu Lab 3D printers are available in the following variants:

Buildplate type Max. temperature Build surface Compatibility
Textured PEI plate 180 ºC 256 x 256 mm X1/P1/A1
Adhesive sheet for high temperature plate 200 ºC 256 x 256 mm X1/P1/A1
Dual-sided textured PEI plate 180 ºC 180 x 180 mm A1 Mini
Smooth PEI plate 120 ºC 256 x 256 mm X1/P1/A1
Smooth PEI plate 120 ºC 180 x 180 mm A1 Mini

The features of each type of buildplate will be discussed in detail below.

Textured PEI plate

This textured PEI plate for the Bambu Lab X1/P1/A1 3D printers is made of a sheet of magnetic stainless steel (0.5 mm) coated with PEI powder coating (0.075 mm). The PEI coating gives the builplate the capability to withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles without property loss. Furthermore, it creates a unique rugged surface finish on the bottom of the printed part. The magnetic steel plate significantly reduces the risk of the first layer detaching due to deformation.

This design and combination of materials provides strong adhesion of first layer to the buildplate and ensures effortless print removal by simply bending the buildplate gently. This buildplate is very durable and comaptible with various filaments such as PLA (also with carbon and glass fibers), ABS, PET/-G (with fibers), TPU, ASA, PVA, PC (with fibers) and PA (with fibers). No adhesion product is necessary to ensure excellent adhesion (with the exception of TPU, PC and PA). If an adhesion product is used, it should be the official Bambu Lab glue.

Adhesive sheet for the HT base

Please keep it mind that this variant does not come with the HT base. It only includes the adhesive sheet.

The adhesive sheet for the Bambu Lab high-temperature base for 3D printers X1/P1/A1 ensures superior first layer adhesion and easy part removal. The surface of this sheet is smooth and matte, resulting in a soft texture on the bottom of the print. The high-temperature print bed itself features a unique dual design (both sides are printable), where one side is the Bambu Lab engineering base and the other side has this additional high-temperature sheet.

High-temperature print bed design

The Bambu Lab engineering base is created by applying a unique thermoset coating over hardened steel, providing greater durability compared to PC and PEI sheets. This makes it suitable for printing engineering materials. The high-temperature sheet is made of PEI, resulting in improved heat resistance and reduced risk of warping at high printing temperatures.

This adhesive sheet for the HT buildplate is compatible with most 3D printing filaments such as PLA (also with carbon and glass fibers), ABS, PET/-G (with fibers), TPU, ASA, PVA, PC (with fibers) and PA (with fibers). The use of the official Bambu Lab glue is recommended with all those materials except for PLA.

Dual-sided textured PEI plate

This dual-sided textured PEI plate has the same properties as the textured PEI plate for the X1/P1/A1 3D printers. Apart from offering a different build surface compatible only with the A1 Mini 3D printer (180 x 180 mm), this dual-sided textured PEI plate provides users with the option to have a spare or backup printing surface readily available.

This can be particularly beneficial in scenarios where one side of the plate becomes worn or damaged over time. Instead of replacing the entire plate, users can simply flip it and continue printing on the unused side, extending the overall lifespan and usability of the PEI plate. Additionally, it allows users to experiment with different bed adhesion properties or textures without needing a separate plate, offering a convenient and flexible printing experience.

Smooth PEI plate

This plate is available in two versions: for X1/P1/A1 3D printers (256 x 256 mm) or for the A1 Mini printer (180 x 180 mm). It consists of a smooth PEI sheet (0.125 mm) and a magnetic spring steel plate (0.5 mm/0.4 mm) and can withstand bed temperatures up to 120 ºC. Recommended bed temperatures for various materials can be found in Table 2.

This plate, compatible with many 3D printing filaments, gives parts a smooth and matte surface finish. Using a smooth PEI plate helps to improve Z-axis accuracy during printing, ensuring greater accuracy and consistency in vertical dimensions. These features make the smooth PEI plate an excellent choice for printing parts that require a high degree of precision in fit, where exact alignment and tight tolerances are essential.

Temperature recommendations

The following table resumes the recommended bed temperatures for various 3D printing materials, as well as recommendations concerning the use of adhesives.

General usage tips

The manufacturer recommends following these simple use and maintenance steps to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the Bambu Lab buildplates:

  1. It is recommended to regularly clean the surface with soap and water to eliminate any dust or grease residue first. IPA alcohol can be used as a last resort. Acetone is not recommended.
  2. Delicately sanding the surface using fine-grit sandpaper, with 600 grit being the recommended option, can assist in restoring adhesion. This only applies to the textured PEI buildplates.
  3. Prior to initiating auto-leveling, it is essential to repetitively wipe the nozzle in the dedicated area on the build plate to thoroughly eliminate any lingering material residue from the nozzle tip. The coating in the specially designed wiping area will naturally wear down over time. This is a normal occurrence and does not impact print quality or nozzle lifespan, so there is no need for concern regarding any quality issues.
  4. Before removing the part from the buildplate, it is highly recommended to wait a few minutes until the buildplate has cooled down to room temperature. This will not only prevent burns but also prolong the longevity of the build plate.

Calibration concerns

Textured PEI buildplate

The automatic calibration for flow rate on the textured PEI plate is less dependable when compared to other smooth plates. In cases of inconsistent results, we suggest conducting the calibration using a smooth plate for better accuracy.

High temperature buildplate

Differences in color and shine on the high temperature plate's surface, along with the removal of exposed metal areas, are minor refinements aimed at optimizing the production process and enhancing surface quality. In the event that the coating remains on the nozzle during wiping, it will be heated and melted prior to printing the model. These alterations have no impact on leveling, Lidar, adhesion, or the overall usability range.
