The 3NTR ABS ESD+ filament belongs to the filament portfolio of the Italian brand 3NTR, a renowned manufacturer of industrial 3D printers and filaments. The ABS ESD+ filament was designed especially for protecting sensitive electronic parts from electrostatic discharge by preventing static charge and dust accumulation. It has an electrical surface resistance of 9*109 Ohm/m2 and is perfect for industries that work with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) or other very sensitive electronic devices.

ESD events are frequently observable in everyday life in hair static or when a spark is produced upon touching a doorknob. Such events are harmless to humans but highly risky and damaging in manufacturing operations involving electronic components. ESD filaments, such as the 3NTR ABS ESD+ filament, act as a dissipator of the electrostatic discharge and safely "evacuate" it along the surface of the 3D printed piece, away from the sensitive electronics. ESD safe materials are also extremely useful in industries with potentially explosive atmospheres (petrochemical plants, coal mines, flour mills, areas with powder-based 3D printers).

ABS, together with PLA, was the first 3D printing material available for 3D printing. It is a thermoplastic polymer made up of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. These substances give ABS a range of useful properties, such as hardness, rigidity and resistance to chemicals and high temperatures (acrylonitrile), resistance to brittleness in low temperatures (butadiene), and mechanical strength (styrene).

ABS is resistant to harsh weather conditions, which makes it a good material for outdoor applications. Its lightness and low cost of manufacturing make it a popular material for making prototypes and plastic preview models. Its resistance to temperature changes means it is easy to recycle. Furthermore, ABS is perfect for applications where electrical insulation is needed thanks to its low heat and electricity conductivity. ASB can also absorb shock quite well thanks to its great impact resistance.

Today, ABS has numerous applications in many industries, for example to make decorative parts for car interiors, household appliances, computer keyboard components, face guards for wall sockets, power tool housings, plastic tubing, protective headgear, and toys.

ABS has a tendency to warp. This, however, is remedied by a carbon fiber base additivized with glass fiber that the 3NTR 3D printers incorporate. Since this material is designed to be used on the 3NTR printers, warping should be no problem and there should be no need for external adhesion improving products.

In the unlikely event of warping occuring with the ABS ESD+ filament, it can be prevented by selecting the "raft" or "brim" setting in the slicing software. The "raft" is a thick first layer printed below the actual piece, quite easy to remove when the print is done. When the raft setting is chosen, the infill value should be lowered to reduce the amount of heat stored by the piece. The "brim" setting is a "membrane" 3D printed around the piece, ideal for printing small parts or parts with a narrow base. A brim should not be thicker than 5 mm as it can cause the first layer to peel off the printing base.

3D printing tall and thin parts with ABS may result in deformations as the layers may not have enough time to harden. In order to avoid this, 2 or more pieces can be printed simultaneously. This way, the ABS will have enough time to harden as the extruder moves from the first piece to the second after each layer.
