In the world of FDM/FFF 3D printing, there is a family of materials that has stood out clearly above all others for some years now, the PAEK family (polyaryletherketone or polyaryletherketone ether ketone). The materials belonging to this class are semi-crystalline plastics, which withstand high temperatures (around 200 ºC) while maintaining high mechanical strength values.

The PAEK family includes PEEK, PEKK and PEI. All of them have high mechanical strength, chemical resistance and high temperature flammability.

PEEK (polyetheretheretherketone) is one of the world's highest performing polymers. PEEK has exceptional mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance properties, making it an ideal material for some of the most demanding applications such as seals, gears, bushings, bearings, pump and compressor components. Industries such as automotive, aerospace, defence, defence, semiconductor and oil/gas depend on PEEK for applications where failure is not an option.

PEEK GF filament is a filament composed of PEEK and reinforced with glass fibre, which offers excellent thermo-mechanical properties. This material has a thermal distortion temperature of 310 °C, and is complemented by the exceptional mechanical and chemical resistance properties of PEEK.

ASome of the most outstanding properties of this filament are:

  • Glass transition temperature of 143°C.
  • Thermal distortion temperature (HDT @ 1.8MPa) of 310°C.
  • Melting temperature of 343°C.
  • Inherent flame resistance (UL94 V-0).
  • Excellent mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance.
  • Continuous use temperature of 260°C for 10,000 hours, up to 310°C for short periods.
  • Excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, such as those used in the oil/gas, automotive, aerospace and chemical processing industries.

This filament is an advanced material that requires the use of a industrial 3D printer that reaches printing temperatures of 380-410°C and a chamber temperature of up to 140°C. Due to its difficulty in printing, this filament is recommended for expert users.

The use of PEEK GF requires extensive experience in the 3D printing industry and a qualified 3D printer, as it requires an extrusion temperature of 380-410°C, a base temperature of 130-150°C and a chamber temperature of up to 140°C, therefore it is recommended to use industrial 3D printers that meet all requirements.

To ensure good adhesion to the substrate and to avoid warping, the use of Nano Polymer Adhesive is recommended.

In the case of PEEK GF filament, it is recommended to use a nozzle with at least 0.5 mm output diameter to avoid clogging. In addition, it is highly recommended that the nozzle be made of hardened steel, as glass fibre can be very abrasive.
