What is FDM?

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing is widely utilized across private, professional, and industrial sectors, operating by extruding thermoplastic filaments through a heated nozzle to build three-dimensional objects layer by layer. Hobbyists use FDM printers for crafting prototypes, customizing gadgets, and producing functional objects, while professionals employ them for rapid prototyping and concept validation. Industries across automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, and healthcare integrate FDM printers into manufacturing processes, leveraging their ability to streamline production, reduce lead times, and lower costs. FDM 3D printing continues to revolutionize product development, manufacturing, and innovation across diverse industries.

The materials

In the realm of FDM 3D printing, a diverse range of thermoplastic materials is available, each offering unique properties suited to different applications. Common materials include PLA (Polylactic Acid), known for its biodegradability and ease of use, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), prized for its strength and durability, and PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol), valued for its chemical resistance and clarity. Additionally, specialized filaments such as TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) for flexible parts and nylon for high-strength applications further expand the capabilities of FDM technology. There are also the so-called ultra polymers from the PAEK family, prized for their exceptional mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. They find applications in demanding industries where traditional materials may not suffice, e.g. aerospace.

Considerations

When choosing which 3D printer to buy, several factors must be considered. Firstly, the type of user who is going to use the 3D printer, as it is not the same for a private user, who can invest more time in carrying out maintenance or adaptations to the printer, as it is for an industrial user where, above all, robustness and reliability are paramount. On the other hand, the materials to be printed and the maximum dimensions required must be taken into account, as this will be one of the limiting factors when determining whether the 3D printer is suitable for this purpose. Another factor to consider is the maximum precision you are looking for, in order to check which 3D printers meet your requirements.
