Filament based on ABS reinforced with graphene nanofibre for healthcare applications.

The Neo ABS filament is one of the materials presented by Medphen, a company focused on the development of 3D printing materials for healthcare applications.

The Neo ABS filament is composed of an ABS base and a graphene nanofibres reinforcement.

ABS is a plastic made of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. It is called an engineering plastic because it is a material with higher mechanical and thermal properties than conventional plastics, which also makes it more difficult to print.

Due to its composition, ABS has the following properties:

  • Acrylonitrile provides toughness, high temperature resistance, chemical resistance and stiffness.
  • Butadiene provides impact strength and temperature toughness, especially at low temperatures.
  • Styrene provides additional stiffness and mechanical strength.

Due to its versatility and good properties, this material was one of the first to be used in 3D printing along with PLA.

Neo ABS filament is a highly hydrophobic material with antibacterial properties, making it an ideal material of choice for the manufacture of devices for the healthcare environment requiring high quality.

In addition to the properties inherited from ABS, graphene also contributes to its properties. Graphene nanofibre is a material that belongs to the family of graphene-based materials (GBM). Graphene nanofibre enables the processability to produce the highest quality elements, large parts and parts with complex structural geometries, as it improves the dimensional stability of the material.

Some of the possible applications for this filament are:

  • Medical device housing, respiratory devices.
  • Digital anatomy, to create models of real human anatomy for surgical preparation and rehearsal of procedures with students.
  • For dispensers, pill dispensers and medicine containers, as well as protective boxes.

It should be noted that the use of the material for a particular application must be tested by the user beforehand to determine its suitability.

Thanks to its mechanical properties, as well as its compliance with regulations for certain applications, Neo ABS filament stands out for the variety of uses and possibilities it offers for the medical sector.

The printing temperature range of this material is between 235 and 250 ºC. The printing temperature is directly related to the printing speed. The higher the processing speed, the higher the printing temperature should be. This material requires a heated bed. The recommended bed temperature is between 90 - 100 ºC. If the adhesion to the substrate is nevertheless weak, the use of specific 3D printing adhesives such as Magigoo or Dimafix is recommended.

The use of fully enclosed printers is recommended (although it is not necessary to have a heated chamber) to prevent the internal stresses produced by the cooling of the parts from causing unwanted breakage or deformation.

Neo ABS filament can absorb moisture. If signs of moisture are detected, it is recommended to dry the filament with a filament drying device such as PrintDry Pro. It is also recommended to store the filament in a vacuum container such as PrintDry or in a sealed bag with built-in desiccant.

This material is abrasive, so it is recommended to use a V6 or MK8 hardened steel nozzle to prevent corrosion and deterioration of the nozzle. In addition, due to the carbon nanofibre reinforcement, nozzle clogging can occur. To eliminate this problem, filament shrinkage should be used with caution and even eliminated.

After use of the Neo ABS filament, it is recommended to use cleaning filament to remove any remaining material from the hotend.
