PA-6 R filament made from recycled fishing nets ideal for shock resistant parts.

The PA-6 R filament is a nylon filament created from recycled fishing nets from the French coast, within the framework of the RECYPECH programme of the Coopération Maritime, which aims to recycle waste from the fishing industry.

This initiative was launched by the Guingamp-Paimpol Agglomération (Brittany, France) to establish a circular economy with waste from the port. The collected fishing nets are taken to ESATCO where they are transformed into plastic pellets by Fil & Fab in Brest and finally turned into filament for 3D printers by Nanovia.

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is the most common extruded polyamide. It is known in industry for its good damping properties and impact resistance, as well as good toughness at low temperatures. It is ideal for bearings and gears, for example.

This filament is a polymer with a certain degree of flexibility (elongation at break) which makes it suitable for the creation of mechanical parts that need to absorb impacts. Nanovia PA-6 R has a very low mechanical degradation rate when heated, which allows it to be used up to about 100 °C, making it easy to create shock-resistant mechanical parts.

The advantages of the PA6 R filament include:

  • Heat resistant
  • Resistant to chemicals
  • Shock absorbing
  • Recycled

PA6 has a high sensitivity to moisture and must be kept in dry conditions at all times.

It must be taken into account that PA6 is a material with a certain difficulty in printing, due to the warping effect it can generate.

PA6 is a very hygroscopic material, so it is advisable to store PA6 pellets in an airtight bag or use desiccant bags to prevent them from absorbing moisture. If the pellets have moisture in them, the filament that is manufactured may contain small imperfections that can negatively affect the final result.

To ensure good printing conditions, PA-6 filament should be dried at 60°C for 4 hours or more when the spools have been exposed to moisture for a prolonged period of time.
