Filament composed of a blend of nylon and glass fibre optimised for FDM 3D printing.

Taulman3D is a filament manufacturer specialising in two materials: nylon and co-polyester (PET). It focuses on the creation of new materials for additive manufacturing and has a very wide and interesting range of products, especially for professional users.

Within its range of technical filaments is the Taulman Glass Fiber Alloy filament, a nylon-based filament with glass fibre (GF) filler.

Nylon, also called polyamide (PA), is a very common polymer used in a wide variety of products and is used in all industrial sectors today due to its mechanical and thermal properties.

Glass fibre consists of many very fine silicon dioxide fibres. The addition of glass fibre in the filament composition creates a reinforcing structure that improves the strength of the filament and adds rigidity to the material. Generally, glass-filled polyamide filaments (PA GF) are made from a standard base material with a percentage of glass fibre filler.

Optimised composition

In the case of Glass Fiber Alloy filament, Taulman has developed a custom blend, creating a material with a composition specifically designed for 3D printing. Thus, the percentage of glass fibre filler used in the filament improves its consistency during the processing of the material, as well as the strength of the 3D printed parts.

The main advantages of this filament composition are:

  • Ease of processing
  • High rigidity
  • Low weight
  • High temperature resistance

After a long R&D process, Taulman has revolutionised the market with the launch of this filament, improving the existing glass-filled filament options on the market and addressing the needs of professional FDM 3D printing users.

Due to its characteristics, Taulman Glass Fiber Alloy filament is an ideal material for the manufacture of prototypes, functional parts and elements of high structural resistance, being a very useful material in different sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, energy, defence and health sectors, as it allows the manufacture of highly rigid parts that are resistant to high temperatures.

This filament is composed of a polyamide base. This material is hygroscopic, i.e. it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the environment.

Processing a material with moisture can negatively affect the outcome of 3D printed parts, and even directly affect their mechanical properties. For this reason, it is recommended to store the material in a Printdry smart filament container, use a filament dryer such as PrintDry Pro at 60°C for 8 hours or store in a Fiber Three Safe case, which can also be used during the manufacturing process to ensure that the material remains moisture-free.

The manufacturer recommends printing this material at an extrusion temperature of 250-260°C and heating the heated bed to 55°C to improve the adhesion of the material to the printing surface. In addition, a print surface specific adhesive such as Magigoo PA can be used for optimal adhesion.

The user should be aware that this material is reinforced with fibres that are abrasive and can damage the inside of standard brass nozzles, so it is recommended to use a hardened steel nozzle. To avoid possible clogging, it is also recommended that the nozzle has at least a 0.5 mm outlet diameter.
