High modulus carbon fibre filled PA6 filament for the manufacture of light and rigid parts.

CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 filament is one of the materials offered by 3DXtech, a renowned North American manufacturer specialising in technical and advanced filaments.

CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 is a high performance filament based on Polyamide 6 reinforced with high modulus carbon fibre.

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is the most common extruded polyamide. It is known in industry for its good cushioning properties and impact resistance, as well as good toughness at low temperatures.

CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 is an ideal material for industrial applications requiring high thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance properties, while retaining a certain printability compared to other Nylon filaments.

Carbon fibre reinforced filament

In addition to the properties provided by nylon, the CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 filament is reinforced with carbon fibres between 5 and 10 micrometres wide aligned along the axis of the material. This, together with its physical composition, gives this material its excellent properties.

The carbon fibre filler improves the properties of the base polymer (PA6) by increasing its thermal properties, strength and stiffness, as well as its dimensional stability. In addition, the carbon fibre provides an eye-catching surface finish.

Carbon fibre reinforcement is ideal for any application where lightness and stiffness are required. Carbon fibre reinforced parts are very popular in aerospace, civil engineering, military and motorsport, as they use less material and save weight while maintaining excellent mechanical properties.

Thus, the carbon fibre reinforcement produces a 3D printing filament that has the best properties of the base polymer, in this case Nylon.

Some of the most outstanding qualities of the CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 filament are:

  • Excellent printability.
  • High tensile strength and stiffness.
  • Abrasion and wear resistance.
  • Higher chemical resistance than traditional 3D printing materials.
  • High thermal properties.

This material is ideal for users who require lightweight parts without sacrificing rigidity.

CarbonX™ PA6+CF Gen3 filament should be printed at a temperature between 255 and 275°C. The recommended bed temperature is between 60 and 70°C. A heated chamber is not required.

To ensure good adhesion to the base and to avoid warping, the use of Magigoo PA is recommended.

The recommended layer height is 60 % of the nozzle diameter used. It is not recommended to print layers smaller than 0.2 mm with carbon fibre reinforced filaments.

This material is particularly abrasive and can cause rapid wear on brass nozzles compared to normal wear. When worn, the nozzle diameter widens inconsistently and the printer experiences extrusion problems that can affect the quality of the 3D printed part. It is therefore recommended to use hardened steel nozzles such as the hardened steel nozzles from E3D or Brozzl. In addition, it is recommended to use nozzles larger than 0.4 mm to avoid clogging.

This material can absorb moisture, so it is recommended to store it in a vacuum container such as those from PrintDry or use a filament dryer such as PrintDry Pro.

If you have an FDM 3D printer with a dual extruder and require 3D printing of complex parts, it is possible to use this material in combination with AquaTek™ X1 UMS, a hot water soluble material.
