A temperature sensor is part of the melt zone of the hotend. Its task is to measure the temperature of the heating block, and the accuracy of a 3D printing project may depend on the sensor’s quality and proper functioning. The PT 1000 RTD temperature sensor by Slice Engineering is a highly reliable sensor with a temperature range of -50 ºC to 500 º.

The PT 1000 RTD temperature sensor is a Resistance Temperature Detector, which means that its functioning is based on the variation of the resistance of a conductor with temperature. It is made in the USA with high quality materials - it has a 300 series stainless steel cartridge for better durability, a robust thin-film sensor, a 24 AWG multi stranded cable with fiberglass insulation, and a platinum resistor.

Platinum based resistors are capable of detecting even the smallest temperature changes with excellent accuracy - IEC 60751 Class B tolerance (+/- 0.3 +0.005 |t| °C). This can be achieved thanks to platinum’s properties - consistency across batches, resistance to contaminant gases, high and stable resistance, and a low temperature coefficient. Measurement errors common for PT 100 sensors are virtually non-existent with the PT 1000 RTD sensor.

The PT 1000 RTD sensor is 15 mm long and the sensor cartridge is 3 mm in diameter. The 2 m long cable makes the sensor easily adaptable to any standard 3D printer. The 1000 RTD sensor works best with high amperage mainboards like Duet 3, SKR PRO V1.x or GTR V1.0, without the need for an amplifier.

As far as firmware, the sensor works with Marlin, Duet/RepRapFirmware and Klipper. A guide on how to perform an firmware update is available in the Downloads section.

In order to ensure a good fit and stability of the sensor within the heatblock, a dowel pin is included with the PT 1000 RTD sensor.

The PT 1000 RTD temperature sensor is crucial for achieving accuracy, especially in 3D printing with high temperature materials such as PEEK, PEEK or PEI but will also work excellently with standard (PLA and ABS) and engineering plastics (PC, PET, PP, PA, TPE/TPU, ASA, HiPS, PVA).

The PT 1000 RTD sensor works with Marlin, Duet/RepRapFirmware (RRF), and Klipper. The manufacturer provides a detailed guide on how to update the user’s firmware to be compatible with the PT 1000 RTD temperature sensor. The guide is also available in the Downloads tab in PDF format.

The temperature sensor is susceptible to wear and tear, so it should be regularly inspected and maintained in order to avoid erroneous temperature readings.
