The component is a drive screw made of POM (polyoxymethylene, also known as acetal or Delrin) designed for use in LDM type extruders aimed at the deposition of ceramic pastes and mixtures. Its main function is to meter and control the material flow within the extruder body, providing low friction and dimensional stability during operation.

Material and Relevant Properties

POM offers high stiffness, good wear resistance, and a low coefficient of friction, making it suitable for sliding elements and transport screws in systems requiring volumetric precision. In addition, POM shows good resistance to oils and many solvents, although prolonged contact with strong alkalis and certain acids should be avoided.

Design and Application Advantages

Thanks to its intrinsic lubricity and dimensional stability, the POM screw reduces internal friction and material build-up in applications with dense ceramic pastes. This allows fast retractions and flow stops without overpressure. Its use minimizes the need for external lubrication and extends maintenance intervals compared to metallic or higher-friction components.

For cleaning, gentle mechanical methods should be used and, if necessary, solvents compatible with POM, avoiding strong alkaline products. It is recommended to periodically inspect the thread and working surface according to the abrasiveness of the material used. In case of signs of wear or deformation, the screw should be replaced preventively.
