PLA FlameGuard Spectrum
The PLA FlameGuard is a groundbreaking filament created by Spectrum from the Floreon® Therma-Tech PLA formula, recognized for its innovation with the 2024 Plastics Industry Association Bioplastics Innovation Award. Engineered for applications requiring both durability and fire resistance, this filament offers exceptional high-temperature resistance and high crystallinity, ensuring robust performance in demanding environments.
FlameGuard PLA is a halogen-free, flame-retardant material that complies with the V0 fire safety standard, making it ideal for applications in electronics enclosures, automation device parts, furniture components, and speaker housings. This environmentally friendly alternative to traditional FR ABS eliminates the use of halogens, which are often harmful to recyclability and contribute to landfill waste. FlameGuard PLA supports a more sustainable approach, offering recyclability and a significantly lower environmental impact.
With a carbon footprint up to seven times lower than standard FR ABS, FlameGuard PLA has a typical PCF of just 0.6 kg CO2 e/kg, compared to 3.8 kg CO2 e/kg for ABS FR, while retaining comparable physical properties such as modulus of elasticity and tensile strength. This makes Spectrum PLA FlameGuard an excellent choice for those seeking both high-performance and eco-conscious materials for advanced, fire-safe applications.
Once opened, the Spectrum filaments must be stored properly to prevent moisture absorption from the air. Filament is best stored in a hermetically sealed bag with desiccant, in a vacuum-sealed container or in a smart filament container. If the filament absorbs too much moisture, it should be dried in a filament dryer in accordance with the settings recommended for the material in question.
In order to avoid extrusion problems and obtain high quality parts with the Spectrum filaments, it is highly recommended to use the printing parameters (extrusion temperature, bed temperature, printing speed, fan settings) provided in each material's respective technical datasheet. It is also crucial to follow any other recommendations such as the use of an abrasion-resistant nozzle. The datasheets can be found in the Attachments section.
It is strongly recommended to use standard safety equipment during printing and post-processing of parts 3D printed with Spectrum filaments: safety goggles, gloves, breathing apparatus and protective clothing as required.
