PLA ESD filament is one of the materials offered by 3DXtech, a renowned American manufacturer specialising in technical filaments for professional applications.

PLA ESD filament is a filament specifically developed for applications requiring electrostatic discharge protection. It is manufactured from Natureworks PLA and CNT for exceptional repeatability and reliability and its surface resistance ranges from 10^7 to 10^9 Ohm.

Printed part with PLA ESD.

Thanks to its high PLA content, this material retains many of the properties of PLA:

  • Ease of printing.
  • No need for hot bed.
  • Low shrinkage, almost no warping effect.
  • Low odour - ideal for printing in office environments.

In addition, PLA ESD has other very interesting properties that make it stand out from other ESD materials:

  • Consistent and reliable surface strength.
  • Better impact retention and elongation than similar ESD-safe materials.
  • Low particulate contamination.
  • Minimal contribution to outgassing and ionic contamination.

PLA ESD filament is ideal for the manufacture of hard disk drive components, enclosures or connectors. It is also very useful in industrial applications such as device manufacturing, transportation, measurement, end-of-arm tooling and sensing applications.

In order to achieve the highest possible electrostatic conductivity, it is recommended to use the highest possible extrusion temperature recommended by the manufacturer (220 ºC).

PLA ESD filament is as easy to print as PLA. The recommended printing temperature is between 210 and 220 ºC. PLA ESD is a filled product and has a higher melt viscosity compared to unfilled PLA. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to print at higher temperatures than a standard PLA to allow the material to flow properly.

As with a standard PLA, this material does not require the use of a heated bed, although if it is available, the recommended temperature is 23-60 ºC. The recommended print speed is 60 mm/s or higher, and the use of the coating fan is recommended for optimal finishing.

Resistivity is greatly affected by temperature and printing speed. In case the resistivity values of the part are too high, it is recommended to increase the printing temperature and reduce the speed.

Although it is not prone to warping, Magigoo or Dimafix can be used to improve adhesion to the base.

With PLA ESD it is not necessary to use reinforced nozzles as this filament has low abrasion, but nozzles with output diameters of 0.5 mm or more are recommended to avoid clogging.

If you have an FDM 3D printer with a double extruder and you need to 3D print complex parts, it is possible to use this material in combination with X1 support, a hot water soluble material.
