The Mosquito Magnum+ hotend by Slice Engineering is a high-performance, air-cooled hotend with a signature bimetallic heat break and rigid heat sink structure, designed with premium materials to handle high-flow and high-temperature 3D printing applications. With its ability to reach temperatures of up to 500 ºC, the Mosquito Magnum+ is engineered for professional and industrial use, offering exceptional speed and performance in critical sectors such as medical, military and mass-manufacturing applications. Its extended melt zone allows for faster printing speeds and a higher flow rate (study in Attachments section), making it an ideal solution for demanding print jobs that require efficiency without sacrificing print quality. This design improvement allows the Mosquito Magnum+ to achieve impressive flow rates, with the ability to print PLA at a rate of 88 mm³/s and ABS at 91 mm³/s, significantly speeding up the printing process without compromising the structural integrity of the printed parts. One of the key features of the Mosquito Magnum+ is its larger hot block, which results in a longer melt zone compared to its predecessors, the Mosquito and Mosquito Magnum hotend.

This design choice increases both printing speed and flow rate while ensuring that the filament makes direct contact with the hot block for maximum heat transfer efficiency. The improved structural strength and tapered design make it particularly suitable for large-format and non-planar printing, while the lightweight construction ensures that it doesn't add unnecessary mass to the printer head.

Adaptable and easy to use

The Magnum+ is also highly adaptable, allowing for a range of customizations based on user needs. While the standard version is air-cooled, the hotend can be upgraded with optional liquid or conduction-based cooling solutions, offering more flexibility in managing heat during high-demand printing jobs.

The Mosquito Magnum+ hotend also features two heater sockets, allowing for expandable heating power of 50 W or 100 W, and two temperature sensor sockets that can accommodate optional sensors like the PT 1000 RTD sensor, enhancing temperature monitoring and control. Another significant advantage of the Mosquito Magnum+ is its user-centric design, versatility and robust construction. It retains the iconic “roll cage” structure from its predecessor, which not only enhances durability but also simplifies maintenance.

The rigid tubular frame connecting the heat sink and hot block protects the heat break from accidental damage and allows for one-handed nozzle changes. Additionally, the hotend is compatible with RepRap style nozzles such as the GammaMaster nozzle, making it easy to integrate into a variety of 3D printing setups, and it works with the optional convection shield accessory to combat heat loss during printing.

Assembling the hotend

Assembly of the Magnum+ requires specific tools to ensure proper installation and functionality. A 3 Nm torque wrench with a 9 mm deep well socket (for 1.75 mm hotend) or open-end wrench (for 2.85 mm hotend) is necessary, along with a 0.15 Nm torque wrench, a 1.5 Nm torque wrench, and a vise. Detailed assembly instructions are provided in the Attachments section, ensuring that users can easily set up their hotend and get started with their 3D printing projects.

If you are going to use the Mosquito Magnum+ hotend with temperatures above 300 ºC, it is essential to use a high temperature thermistor or a PT100 or PT1000 probe, and it is also advisable to use a high temperature nozzle such as the Olsson Ruby High Temperature.

The structure of the Mosquito Magnum+ hotend is rigid enough to allow the nozzle to be changed with just one hand, however, it must be ensured that the connection between the hotend and the printer can withstand the strain. For safety reasons, it is recommended that the Mosquito Magnum+ hotend structure is held firmly in place while the nozzle is being replaced.
