Nanovia is a renowned French manufacturer of filaments and products for 3D printing specialised in offering technical products.

Nanovia Istroflex is a flexible filament based on a biodegradable polymer with oyster powder. It is therefore considered a Biocomposite material. In addition, the Istroflex filament can be composted.

This innovative material is one of the first compostable flexible filaments on the market. Biocomposite filaments are presented as an alternative to others with a greater environmental impact. Sustainability is an increasingly important factor in various sectors, making this filament an option to consider.

Nanovia Istroflex has been developed together with the technical platform ComposiTIC and Usine de Kervellerin and was awarded the CCI Morbihan innovation prize.

The whitish colour of this filament is naturally given by its filling with particles derived from oysters. For this reason, the colour of the filament may vary slightly from one batch to another, without implying any manufacturing defect.

In terms of properties, the Istroflex filament has a Shore 93A hardness. This hardness makes the filament very easy to print compared to other flexible filaments, allowing it to be printed even with bowden type extruders. In addition, this material has excellent adhesion between layers.

In addition, Nanovia Istroflex filament is ROHS-certified as it is free of heavy metals. The material is also certified as endocrine disruption free, and is suitable for food contact. This last feature is very differentiating, as there are not many flexible filaments with this certification. For more information, it is recommended to consult the material safety data sheet.

Without a doubt, Istroflex is an innovative material in the flexible filament category, being one of the few compostable filaments on the market.

It is not absolutely essential to use a heated bed when 3D printing Istroflex. However, if available, it is recommended to use a temperature between 40 and 60°C to improve adhesion to the base. It is also possible to use adhesives such as Magigoo for optimal adhesion and to avoid warping.

The recommended printing temperature is between 250 and 280°C, which is slightly higher than for other flexible filaments. It is possible that not all 3D printers can reach this temperature range, so it is recommended to check this.

Istroflex is a hygroscopic material. It is therefore recommended to store the spool in a dry place, preferably with desiccant bags. If moisture is absorbed, we recommend using a device such as Print Dry Pro to dry the filament.
