The PLA Light Weight expandable filament from Smart Materials is one of the most innovative breakthroughs in 3D printing for those who want ultra-lightweight parts without sacrificing strength or surface quality. Thanks to its advanced formulation, this technical filament can reduce weight by up to 65%, maximizing efficiency for every print while significantly lowering material usage. The result is lighter, durable parts with a professional matte finish, perfect for both functional and aesthetic projects.

Video 1: Introduction to the ultra-light Smartfill PLA Light Weight filament from Smart Materials.

The expandable PLA LW is engineered for applications where weight is critical, such as drones, aeromodelling, mobile robotics, structural prototypes, or architectural models. It delivers an excellent balance of mechanical strength and print detail. Its ability to produce large-volume parts with significantly lower weight makes it a go-to choice for industries where every gram matters—from floating components to props and cosplay.

This advanced filament is compatible with most FDM printers and can be printed without a heated bed, making it accessible even on desktop machines. Controlled expansion during extrusion, which varies with temperature, allows users to fine-tune flow for precise dimensions and consistent finishes. This feature ensures material can be optimized for different projects without compromising uniformity in the final results.

The combination of lightweight properties, mechanical strength, and material efficiency makes expandable PLA Light Weight the ideal choice for those looking to print high-performance, durable, and visually stunning parts. Whether in modeling, lightweight engineering, or functional prototyping, this filament sets a new standard for 3D printing performance and quality.

3D File Preparation: To maximize part lightness, it is recommended to design with lightweight internal structures, such as honeycombs or thin walls. Adjusting the flow rate (flow rate) according to the desired expansion allows controlling final weight and optimizing material consumption.

Printer Settings:

  • Nozzle Temperature: 220–250 °C, adjusting according to print speed and desired finish.
  • Bed Temperature: 40–60 °C. While printing without a heated bed is possible, it improves adhesion and reduces warping.
  • Print Speed: 30–50 mm/s to ensure uniform expansion and a stable finish.

Flow Rate Adjustment: Reducing the flow to 60–80% of the standard PLA value allows maximum expansion and lower weight. Expansion is directly proportional to temperature:

  • Higher Temperature: it is recommended to decrease flow to maintain dimensions and stability.
  • Lower Temperature: flow can be increased to compensate for lower expansion.

Always printing a test piece helps find the optimal balance between lightness, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish.

Monitoring During Printing: Carefully checking the first layers ensures good bed adhesion. Limiting the fan in the first layers improves layer bonding and reduces the risk of warping.

Post-Processing (Optional): The matte finish of PLA LW usually avoids the need for sanding or painting. For parts requiring higher strength, it is recommended to increase wall thickness or infill during design.
