The PLA Smartfil Algae filament is an eco-friendly 3D printing material developed by Smart Materials, combining 85% PLA with a significant 15% algae content, specifically spirulina. This material belongs to Smart Materials' ECO filament line and stands out for its sustainable profile, appealing to users seeking environmentally conscious 3D printing solutions. PLA Smartfil Algae is designed to reduce environmental impact by utilizing renewable resources, aligning with the growing trend toward sustainable manufacturing.

The concept of PLA Smartfil Algae originated from the recognition of marine algae as a renewable, abundant, and versatile source of biomass. Spirulina, used in this filament, contributes not only to the sustainable nature of the material but also to the filament’s distinctive green hue. More information on the benefits of sustainable filaments and their environmental impact can be explored in our blog post "Glossary of terms related to the environment" (see Related posts section).

Parts 3D printed using PLA Smartfil Algae exhibit a highly organic look with a rustic, natural texture. The vibrant green color, a direct result of the spirulina, eliminates the need for additional color additives, giving 3D prints a unique, natural finish that enhances the aesthetic appeal of designs. Additionally, both the filament and the printed parts are biodegradable and compostable under industrial conditions, underscoring their environmentally friendly composition.

PLA Smartfil Algae is also highly user-friendly, compatible with any FDM 3D printer that supports PLA, making it accessible for both novice and professional users. The filament has good layer adhesion, low shrinkage, and is best printed at temperatures between 195 ºC and 215 ºC, with a recommended speed of 30 to 50 mm/s and a nozzle of 1 mm. These properties ensure smooth and stable printing results, making it a practical choice for sustainable, aesthetically pleasing projects.

To prevent moisture absorption, store PLA Smartfil Algae in a dry, sealed plastic bag with a filament drying capsule or in an airtight container. Inline filament dryers are recommended during printing, and if needed, drying the filament at 50 ºC for at least 4 hours before printing will ensure optimal print quality.

This material is composed of a PLA base and a filler derived from the reuse of organic materials, in this case from spirulina, so it is recommended to use a 1 mm nozzle to avoid clogging. Similarly, a cleaning filament, such as Smart Clean, should be used to remove any residual material that may have been used previously.
