Magnetically detectable PETG pellets for manufacturing 3D printing filaments with an extruder.

Magnetically detectable PETG is an PETG-based material. PETG is a material that is born by improving PET, a non-toxic thermoplastic polymer used in the manufacture of clothing and products such as containers. PETG offers the possibility of manufacturing resistant and lightweight parts, at the level of materials commonly used in the industry, such as ABS. In certain sectors of the industry these properties are needed, but with a peculiarity to older, that are magnetically detectable. This property is increasingly demanded by the food sector and others that must control the contamination of their products in an exhaustive manner.

Magnetically detectable PETG is a material developed to be detected by a magnetic detector even in cases where the amount of material is very small. This material stands out from other materials because it can be detected by all types of metal detectors, both those that use a permanent magnet and those that work with balanced coils.

Magnetically detectable PETG pellets are small cylinders of the highest quality material and do not incorporate recycled or reclaimed material. Because of these qualities, magnetically detectable PETG pellets are perfect for 3D printing, achieving high print quality. There are several methods for using pellets in 3D printing:

  • Magnetically detectable PETG pellets can be used in the manufacture of filament for FDM 3D printers using Filastruder or any other filament extruder.
  • It is possible to use a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing.

With the combination of Magnetically Detectable PETG Pellets and a good filament extruder such as Filastruder, it is possible to obtain 3D printing filament with qualities similar to those of a commercial Magnetically Detectable PETG filament.

When using Magnetically Detectable PETG Pellets to make filament with a filament extruder such as Filastruder or using a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing, it should be noted that the extrusion temperature must be regulated in relation to the extrusion speed used.

Magnetically detectable PETG pellets are quite resistant to moisture (fungus, mould, etc.). However, it is always advisable to store the pellets in an airtight bag or use desiccant bags to prevent them from absorbing moisture.

For all its properties and its specific characteristic of being magnetically detected, this material is ideal for the industrial sector, as well as for the manufacture of sensors, smart packaging or any other type of element that requires this function.

The suitable temperature for extruding magnetically detectable PETG pellets in the Filastruder is between 220 and 230ºC. For higher extrusion speeds the temperature can be increased to 240°C, but in this case there is a risk of small air bubbles appearing in the filament.

Magnetically detectable PETG pellets do not include abrasive fibres and therefore do not require the use of a hardened steel nozzle.

Although Magnetically detectable PETG is not one of the most hygroscopic materials, it is advisable to store Magnetically detectable PETG pellets in an airtight bag or use desiccant bags to prevent them from absorbing moisture. If the pellets have moisture in them, the filament that is manufactured may contain small imperfections.

When extruding the material, it is recommended to do so in a well-ventilated room, as the vapours given off in the process are not entirely healthy.
