PEEK pellets for manufacturing 3D printing filaments with an extruder.

PEEK (Polyetheretheretherketone) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic technical polymer that offers a unique combination of high mechanical properties, temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance.

PEEK pellets are small cylinders of the highest quality material. They do not incorporate recycled or recovered material. Because of these qualities, PEEK pellets are perfect for 3D printing, achieving high print quality. There are several methods for using pellets in 3D printing:

  • PEEK pellets can be used in the manufacture of filament for FDM 3D printers using Filastruder or any other filament extruder.
  • It is possible to use a pellet extruder for 3D printing directly.

With the combination of PEEK pellets and a good filament extruder such as Filastruder, it is possible to obtain 3D printing filament with qualities similar to those of commercial PEEK filament.

When using PEEK Pellets to make filament with a filament extruder such as Filastruder or using a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing, it should be noted that the extrusion temperature must be regulated in relation to the extrusion speed used. For optimal results, it is recommended to read the product's usage advice.

This material is suitable for applications requiring strength and stiffness as well as ductility. It is chemically resistant to aggressive environments and suitable for sterilisation for medical and food contact applications. It has very good resistance to UV rays and outdoor conditions and is therefore recommended for outdoor use.

Thanks to its properties, PEEK pellets can be used in a wide range of applications ranging from mechanical to surgical tools, as a substitute for original metal parts and components in connectors, insulation for industrial pumps or in vehicles among others.

The use of PEEK in 3D printing requires a great deal of experience in the 3D printing sector and a qualified 3D printer, as it requires an extrusion temperature of 370-420ºC, a base temperature of 150ºC and a chamber temperature of around 120ºC, which is why it is recommended to use professional 3D printers that meet all the requirements.

Post-processing

During the printing of the desired parts with PEEK, internal stresses are generated, as with any type of plastic, which can lead to unwanted breakage or deformation. Eliminating these stresses is very simple and only requires a hot air oven and the following 5 steps:

  1. Place the parts in the oven at room temperature (20ºC).
  2. Heat the oven at 150ºC for 1 hour.
  3. After 1 hour, raise the temperature to 200ºC and leave for another hour.
  4. Lower the temperature again to 150ºC for 30 minutes.
  5. After 30 minutes, turn off the oven and allow the pieces to cool to room temperature inside the oven.

This process must be carried out by qualified personnel.
