In the world of FDM/FFF 3D printing, there is a family of materials that has stood out clearly above all others for some years now, the PAEK family (polyaryletherketone or polyaryletherketone ether ketone). The materials belonging to this class are semi-crystalline plastics, which withstand high temperatures (around 200 ºC) while maintaining high mechanical strength values.

The PAEK family includes PEEK, PEKK and PEI. All of them have high mechanical strength, chemical resistance and high temperature flammability.

ThermaX™ PEEK filament is one of the materials offered by 3DXtech, a renowned North American manufacturer specialising in technical filaments for professional applications. PEEK (polyetheretheretherketone) is one of the highest performing polymers in the world. 3DxTech's PEEK filament has exceptional mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance properties, making it an ideal material for some of the most demanding applications.

The most outstanding properties of 3DxTech ThermaX™ PEEK filament are:

  • Glass transition temperature (Tg) of 143 °C.
  • Melting temperature (Tm) of 343 °C.
  • Inherent flame resistance (UL94 V-0).
  • Excellent mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance.
  • Continuous use temperature (CUT) of 260 °C, higher for short duration.
  • Excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, such as those used in the oil/gas, automotive, aerospace, industrial and chemical processing industries.

This material is an advanced material that requires the use of a industrial 3D printer that reaches printing temperatures between 375 and 410 °C and a chamber temperature of up to 140 °C. Due to its difficulty in printing, this filament is recommended for expert users.

The use of PEEK requires a great deal of experience in the 3D printing sector and a qualified 3D printer, as it requires an extrusion temperature of 380-400°C, a base temperature of 130-140°C and a chamber temperature of up to 140°C, which is why it is recommended to use industrial 3D printers that meet all the requirements. To ensure good adhesion to the printing base it is recommended to use a PEI foil and thus avoid warping effect.
