Bambu Lab PLA Tough+ is an improved version of traditional PLA designed to withstand impacts, repeated flexing, and wear. It offers up to twice the layer adhesion of standard PLA and mechanical properties closer to ABS, but with the ease of printing of PLA. It is ideal for parts that must withstand shocks, vibrations, or frequent use.

This filament comes in 1.75 mm ± 0.03 mm diameter, in reusable 1 kg spools. It is ready to work well with Bambu Lab’s AMS automatic material systems, making it easier to use if you have a compatible printer. Although it prints at higher temperatures than basic PLA, it remains relatively user-friendly, with a slightly more noticeable odor than conventional PLA, and requires good ventilation of the workspace.

To make the most of the capabilities of PLA Tough+, the following settings and best practices are recommended:

  • Print with a standard nozzle, using the preset profile for PLA Tough+ when available.
  • Use a cold bed or Cool Plate, Smooth PEI Plate, or Textured PEI Plate as the print surface.
  • Nozzle temperature slightly higher: adjust within the ranges provided by Bambu to achieve good flow without overheating.
  • Active part cooling fan can improve fine details; use moderate settings for bridges and overhangs.
  • If supports are used, use supports compatible with regular PLA; supports should be easy to remove thanks to the improved layer adhesion of PLA Tough+.

In summary, PLA Tough+ from Bambu Lab is an excellent option for demanding home users, makers, prototypers, and functional projects that require more robustness without the complexity of printing more advanced technical materials. If you are looking for parts that last longer, better withstand daily use, and resist impacts, this filament offers a very good balance of toughness, ease of printing, and aesthetic quality.
