ABS is one of the most widely used materials for 3D printing and is used to make parts and elements that we use in everyday life (car bumpers and headlights, electrical junction boxes, containers, etc.). It is therefore not surprising that manufacturers are developing new materials based on ABS. ABS CF is an Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene reinforced with carbon fibres to improve the overall mechanical properties of the base plastic.

Nanovia's ABS CF pellets stand out from others on the market due to the advanced size distribution of the carbon fibres in the ABS. Both the distribution and the amount of carbon fibre have been carefully studied and developed by Nanovia's technicians to arrive at a material with advanced performance. As a result, ABS CF pellets exert much less wear on the nozzles of filament extruders or 3D printers compared to other materials containing carbon fibre and are much more abrasive.

On the other hand, the development of this material has also achieved high mechanical strength values, superior to those of a standard ABS, with a lower brittleness than many materials combined with carbon fibre.

A common problem that occurs when using ABS is dimensional stability, especially when in an environment with temperatures close to the softening temperature. The introduction of carbon fibre improves dimensional stability and reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion. All this is reflected in a low deformation of the parts made (reduction of the warping effect) and a high mechanical stress distribution power.

Nanovia's ABS CF pellets are ideal for the manufacture of ABS parts that need to withstand high mechanical stresses, high temperature values and be impact resistant.

ABS CF pellets do not incorporate recycled or recovered material. Thanks to these qualities, ABS CF pellets are perfect for 3D printing, achieving high print quality. There are several methods for using pellets in 3D printing:

  • ABS CF pellets can be used in the manufacture of filament for FDM 3D printers using Filastruder or any other filament extruder.
  • It is possible to use a pellet extruder for 3D printing directly.

With the combination of ABS CF pellets and a good filament extruder such as Filastruder, it is possible to obtain 3D printing filament with qualities similar to those of a commercial ABS CF filament.

When using ABS CF Pellets to make filament with a filament extruder such as Filastruder or using a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing, it should be noted that the extrusion temperature must be regulated in relation to the extrusion speed used. For optimal results, it is recommended to read the product's usage tips.

3D printing with ABS filament is a bit more complex than with PLA filament. In the case of ABS CF filament, it is necessary for the print bed to be heated, between 90 and 110ºC. Additionally, the extruder temperature should be between 250 and 270ºC. It is also important to remember that ABS plastic suffers from a phenomenon called "warping," which causes the first layer of the parts to detach from the 3D printer bed. Therefore, if you are going to print large parts, it is advisable to use BuildTak, Kapton Tape, Magigoo, or DimaFix to prevent the parts from detaching from the bed. To ensure the dimensional stability of the parts, it is advisable to use a closed 3D printer.

With ABS CF, it is not necessary to use reinforced nozzles as this filament presents low abrasion. However, it is recommended to use the Olsson Ruby Nozzle for all advanced materials.
