When making large volume prints or in cases where the material used is especially prone to breakage, the installation of a filament sensor is of great help. Designed to eliminate the risk of unfinished prints, the filament sensors automatically detect the presence and movement of the material, pausing the print in the event of its absence.

The company Dyze Design has developed a filament sensor compatible with a wide variety of FDM 3D printers: Sentinel™. This filament sensor works with all types of filaments, and is available in two versions depending on the filament diameter used by the 3D printer.

Daisy chain connection

In situations where contingencies must be kept to a minimum, it is very common to place several sensors in series. This is achieved through a daisy chain. When multiple sensors are daisy-chained, the system compares its light sensor's signal to the previous sensor's and if both signals are positive, a positive output signal is sent.

For the correct operation of any type of sensor, it is essential that the filaments used have been stored correctly and have no traces of dust and/or dirt. To avoid this type of situation, it is recommended to handle the filaments carefully and try not to touch them with dirty hands to avoid leaving traces of grease. It is also recommended to use PrintDry airtight vacuum sealed filament packs. In addition to guaranteeing the cleanliness of the material, these containers avoid other problems such as humidity; causing various failures in 3D printing.

Installation Tips

When connecting Sentinel™ sensors in a chain, the user must take into account a series of parameters:

The IN command represents a signal input. This connector will only be used if the user is daisy-chaining multiple Sentinel™ sensors.

The OUT command represents a signal output. This connector will always be used, either to connect to the motherboard or to a daisy chained Sentinel™ sensor.
