There are certain materials widely used in FDM 3D printing that give off harmful odours and particles, such as ABS or HiPS, which give off 20 times more styrene than exists in the atmosphere during melting. Prolonged breathing of these gases can cause serious harm to FDM 3D printing users.

The HEPA filter serves to remove all of these potentially harmful odours and particles that are generated during the 3D printing process. The Flashforge Adventurer 3 and Adventurer 4 3D printers use a 3-way composite filter, consisting of a HEPA /Cold Catalyst carbon filter and an activated carbon filter to reduce odours and VOCs down to 0.1 microns generated during 3D printing.

The use of 3D printers with a HEPA filter is very important in domestic environments, small offices or educational centres with small enclosed spaces, allowing a safe and odour-free working environment to be maintained.
