Polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) pellets for extrusion.

Polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) is a high performance engineering polymer. It combines high service temperature with excellent mechanical properties and one of the best chemical resistance of all industrial plastics.

Parts produced in PPS can operate at temperatures up to 218°C and cannot be dissolved in any known solvent at temperatures below 200°C. They are inert to acid and caustic attack and are highly resistant to UV radiation, mould and abrasion, making them highly resistant to ageing.

PPS also has a high modulus of elasticity even at elevated temperatures, very low water absorption and flame retardancy. It also has a stable dielectric constant and dissipation factor over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies.

PPS can be 3D printed, so these pellets can be used for FFF filament production or in pellet 3D printing systems. It should be noted that PPS has a melting temperature of 285°C and an extrusion temperature of 315-345°C, and requires a base temperature of 120-150°C and a heated chamber of 60-90°C is advisable.

PPS can be recognised by its characteristic metallic sound when striking a surface.

PPS has a melting temperature of 285 ºC and a Tg of 85 ºC, so the extrusion system used in filament production must use extrusion temperatures between 315 and 345 ºC and be able to cool the filament to a temperature below 85 ºC once it leaves the extruder.

Both the filament produced from these pellets and the parts produced, either directly from the pellets or from a filament derived from them, require a subsequent annealing heat treatment.

This treatment consists of heating the part to 80 ºC for 1 hour, then heating to 130 ºC for 2-3 hours and finally allowing it to cool to room temperature. To minimise deformations resulting from the heat treatment, it is recommended not to remove the part from the printing base or the supports until the heat treatment is completed.
