Medical ABS pellets for manufacturing 3D printing filaments with an extruder.

Medical ABS is an ABS-based material. ABS is a plastic consisting of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. It is called an engineering plastic because it is a material with superior mechanical and thermal properties compared to conventional plastics, which also means that it is more difficult to print.

Medical ABS is a material developed specifically for medical applications and meets the biocompatibility requirements of USP Class VI or ISO 10993-1 certification, which guarantees that it is biocompatible for up to 30 days in contact with the human body (topical use).

Medical ABS pellets are small cylinders of the highest quality material and do not incorporate recycled or reclaimed material. Because of these qualities, Medical ABS pellets are perfect for 3D printing, achieving high print quality. There are several methods for using pellets in 3D printing:

  • Medical ABS pellets can be used in the manufacture of filament for FDM 3D printers using Filastruder or any other filament extruder.
  • It is possible to use a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing.

With the combination of Medical ABS Pellets and a good filament extruder such as Filastruder, it is possible to obtain 3D printing filament with qualities similar to those of a commercial Medical ABS filament.

When using Medical ABS Pellets to make filament with a filament extruder such as Filastruder or using a pellet extruder for direct 3D printing, it should be noted that the extrusion temperature must be regulated in relation to the extrusion speed used. For optimal results, it is recommended to read the product's usage tips.

Whether for filament manufacture or for direct use with a pellet extruder, this material is ideal for the creation of fixation structures for rehabilitation patients, light and strong customised prostheses, orthopaedics, etc. Thanks to the existence of 3D scanners and subsequent modelling, it is possible to create customised prostheses for each patient to ensure greater patient comfort and satisfaction.

The suitable temperature for extruding ABS Medical pellets in the Filastruder is between 220 and 230ºC. For higher extrusion speeds, the temperature can be increased to 240°C, but in this case there is a risk of small air bubbles appearing in the filament.

Although Medical ABS is not one of the most hygroscopic materials, it is advisable to store Medical ABS pellets in an airtight bag or use desiccant bags to prevent them from absorbing moisture. If the pellets have moisture in them, the filament to be manufactured may contain small imperfections.

When extruding the material, it is recommended to do so in a well-ventilated room, as the vapours given off in the process are not entirely healthy.
