D-Limonene
Limonene dextro is a naturally and biodegradable solvent substance that is extracted from the oil that resides in the citrus peel. It is a liquid with an oily and thick texture with a smell reminiscent of oranges and lemons.
In the field of 3D printing in FDM we can find parts that present great difficulties in its manufacture: Parts that require support, with areas of difficult access that prevent the correct removal of these supports.
In these cases it is very useful to use HIPS or Polystyrene (PS) to print the media of our design, since this material is soluble in D-Limonene. Once the piece has been submerged in D-Limonene, the HIPS will disappear giving rise to the piece free of support material within 12 to 24 hours.
It should be taken into account that the effect of D-Limonene as a solvent of HIPS depends on its degree of saturation. As the same amount of D-Limonene is used to dissolve the HIPS of different parts, its effectiveness will decrease until it is depleted.
Great results are obtained from the combination of ABS with HIPS (as support material). HiPS dissolves completely in D-Limonene and however D-Limonene does not interact with ABS.
It is important to emphasize the need for a double extruder printer.
Due to this great utility of D-Limonene and the growing search for biodegradable products in the field of 3D printing, the use of this product is constantly growing as it opens up a wide range of opportunities.
We must remember that D-Limonene is a flammable substance at a temperature above 48ºC, but it is not toxic. For proper storage, we must keep the container perfectly closed and away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dry and well ventilated environment.
Precautions: D-Limonene should be used with caution. Avoid contact with eyes and skin (We recommend the use of latex gloves and a long-term daily use is irritating). Ingestion can be very serious because it can cause lung damage (We recommend using paper mask). It is also harmful to the environment, therefore it is essential to follow the instructions to throw (You have to take a clean point indicating that it is a solvent. In no case should be thrown in the water or sewers.). For more details, please consult the product safety data sheet It should be kept in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, out of direct sunlight and in original container tightly closed to prevent rusting. It is flammable at a temperature above 48 °C but not toxic.
Directions for use: First take should take precautions previously described. It is advisable to work in a place with good ventilation. Then in a glass jar we pour D-Limonene to cover the part and leave covered container. HIPS is dissolved in 12-24 hours depending on the amount of support used. It is advisable to remove the piece from time to time. Once we see that the part is clean support the retired and clarify with abundant water. We can reuse the limonene if we see that is not too dirty particles HIPS.
When using pigmented PS or HIPS (black) or (blue), we recommend testing the materials that will be used in the final execution to ensure that D-Limonene does not affect the final result of the piece. Due to the high concentration of the product, there is a risk that the pigments can peel off at the time of dissolution of the support and stain the final piece.
Naturally biodegradable solvent for dissolving the HIPS filaments (polystyrene).
