Slice Engineering is a Florida-based manufacturer of high-quality components for FDM 3D printers, known for their precision hotEnds. In addition to nozzles, spare parts, and filaments, they offer accessories such as the 3D printing filament desiccant, designed to keep filaments dry and preserve print quality.

Filament Desiccant 2-Pack: 3D Moisture Protection

The Slice Engineering filament desiccant uses infinitely rechargeable activated alumina, a material ten times more powerful than silica gel and completely non-toxic. Each stainless steel container is designed to fit in the center of the filament spool, creating a relative humidity (RH) gradient that absorbs both surface moisture and internal water particles in the filament.

  • Reduces relative humidity to almost 0 in 6-10 hours inside an airtight container.
  • Includes humidity indicator card to monitor RH levels.
  • Available in 2-unit packs (2-pack).
  • Compact and compatible with other filament drying systems.

Impact of Moisture on Filaments

Moisture can severely affect the quality of 3D printing filaments. Main issues include:

  • Brittleness: the filament becomes fragile and may break.
  • Diameter variation: problems in Bowden systems and irregular extrusion.
  • Bubbles and noise: moist filament creates small pops when melting.
  • Under-extrusion and clogs: moisture can block the hotEnd.

Filament Compatibility

The desiccant is useful for any filament but is especially important for hygroscopic materials such as:

  • PA (Nylon), PA-CF (Nylon with carbon fiber)
  • PVA, TPU/TPE
  • PEEK, PEKK, PEI, and other advanced filaments

Common filaments like PLA and ABS are less sensitive, but storage in humid environments can affect print quality.

Conclusion

The Slice Engineering filament desiccant is a compact, efficient, and safe solution to keep moisture under control in 3D printers. Its use helps preserve filament quality and ensures more precise and consistent prints, being especially recommended for hygroscopic or moisture-sensitive materials.

Using the Filament Drying Desiccant is very simple.

  1. Remove the outer shrink wrap.
  2. Take off the cap.
  3. Place the canister into the center of the filament spool. The dimensions of the canister are 49 mm in diameter (+/- a mm) and around 59 mm in height, so it should fit perfectly.
  4. Next, place the spool with the desiccant in an airtight container and monitor the humidity levels on the attached humidity card. When the circles turn pink, it means the humidity has been removed from the container and the desiccant should be recharged.

To recharge the Filament Drying Desiccant, place the canister in an oven heated to 200 °C or more for 2 hours to remove the water from the alumina. The full instruction sheet can be found in the downloads section for this product.
