ABS H.I Smartfil (High Impact) is 40% more impact resistant than a normal ABS.

ABS H.I. Smartfil filament (High Impact) of 1.75mm or 2,85mm is an improved ABS Smartfil aimed at obtaining an even more impact resistant ABS. In fact, ABS H.I. Smartfil (1.75mm or 2,85mm) is 40% stronger than ABS Smartfil.

This material has been developed specifically for industrial applications such as printing with high mechanical performance parts (parts that will withstand high mechanical stresses).

In addition ABS H.I. Smartfil filament (High Impact) is additive to reduce the effect warping and cracking. The warping effect occurs due to the shrinkage of the plastic as it cools affecting the first layer of the piece off of the printer dock. cracking and warping effect is similar to but in the intermediate layers.

ABS is one of the most commonly used materials in 3D printing. It noted for its strength, toughness and rigidity and not being biodegradable as the PLA. One of the weaknesses of the ABS is suffering with exposure to UV rays, so that the ASA has emerged as an evolution of ABS materials to alleviate this weakness of ABS.

There is now a material such as HIPS noted for its high impact resistance, hence its name "High Impact Polystyrene". While the ABS H.I Smartfil (1.75mm or 2,85mm) exceeds the impact resistance properties of HIPS itself and the surface hardness slightly. As advantages of ABS H.I Smartfil against HiPS filament note that is a ABS additivated and its resistance against HIPS but has a greater definition of surface finish, greater insulation and higher chemical resistance.

3D printing with filament ABS H.I. Smartfil is a bit more complex than the PLA filament. In the case of ABS H.I. Smartfil filament is necessary that the print base is hot between 80 and 100 ºC, so printing ABS Smartfil is really easier. Also worth remembering that the ABS plastic undergoes the phenomenon called "warping" which causes the first layer of the pieces off the base of the 3D printer. So if you are printing large pieces it is advisable to use Magigoo, BuildTak, Kapton Tape, DimaFix or 3DLac so that the pieces do not tend to detach from the base.


It is also advisable to set the "raft", which is to create a first thick layer, such as media, who will not suffer that contraction and on which to print the piece. The disadvantage of using the "raft" is that this first layer will have a less smooth. It is advisable to lower the density of "infill" parameter for the part to store less heat. As for the "brim" (the membrane that is created around the piece) parameter is recommended to set it to never greater thicknesses of 5mm to help the first layer will not peel.


If you need to print very thin and tall pieces, you'll notice that the ABS H.I. Smartfil plastic doesn´t give you enough time to harden in each recording layer and therefore the piece is as if it had melted. To solve this problem we give a very simple advice, it prints at the same time at least two pieces, and place them separate at the base. Thus while the extruder is moved from one room to another in each recording layer, the plastic will have enough time to harden getting a much better result. As for the interior temperature where printed it is recommended to be controlled and no drafts. Finally remember to use your 3D printer in a well ventilated room as the fumes released during printing filament ABS are not entirely healthy.
