BioFil Wood by FormFutura is a 3D printing filament based on PCL (polycaprolactone) with a high content of natural wood fibers. Unlike most wood-finished filaments based on PLA, BioFil Wood uses a completely bio-based PCL matrix, offering a unique combination of appearance, touch, and odor similar to natural wood along with reduced environmental impact.

One of its highlights is that it is a material 100% made from natural and renewable resources and compostable at home, a feature uncommon among wood-filled filaments. Thanks to this, it is an especially interesting alternative for sustainable projects, decoration, models, toys, restoration of wooden elements, and creative applications where a natural finish is desired.

The high content of wood fibers gives the printed pieces a texture very similar to real wood, both in appearance and touch. Additionally, the material can be easily machined once printed, allowing sanding, drilling, gluing, painting, or varnishing the pieces to achieve an even more realistic finish. Each print presents slight color variations due to the nature of the fibers used, making each piece unique.

To ensure reliable printing, FormFutura recommends using nozzles of at least 0.8 mm in diameter, as the high concentration of wood particles can increase the risk of clogging with smaller nozzles. Likewise, printing with relatively high layer heights helps reinforce the natural wood appearance of the pieces. Recommended printing parameters include extrusion temperatures between 180 and 200 °C, heated bed temperatures between 40 and 50 °C, and speeds between 20 and 45 mm/s.

As with other materials with natural fillers, it is advisable to store the filament in a dry place protected from moisture. FormFutura advises keeping it below 15% relative humidity and drying it before use when necessary to achieve the best possible print quality.

BioFil Wood also complies with applicable European regulations for materials intended for food contact, using raw materials approved for such applications. However, as with any 3D printed piece, final compliance will also depend on the manufacturing process, the condition of the nozzle, and the conditions of use of the finished piece.

The FormFutura BioFil Wood is a filament specially designed for users looking to replicate the aesthetics and behavior of wood through 3D printing, offering an excellent surface finish, great post-processing possibilities, and a clear focus on sustainability due to its composition based on PCL and natural fibers.

  • Use a 0.8 mm or larger nozzle, as BioFil Wood contains a high proportion of wood particles that may make extrusion difficult with smaller diameters.
  • Set a layer height of 0.2 mm or higher. A greater layer height can enhance the wood-like appearance and texture of printed parts.
  • Start with an extrusion temperature of approximately 180-200 °C and adjust it according to the printer, part geometry and extrusion behaviour.
  • Keep the heated bed at approximately 40-50 °C and check first-layer adhesion before carrying out large prints.
  • Use an approximate printing speed of 20-45 mm/s. For parts with complex geometries, reducing the speed may be advisable to maintain uniform extrusion.
  • Set high cooling, approximately between 50 and 100 %, especially for bridges, overhangs and small details, adjusting it according to the part geometry.
  • Use retraction, starting from an approximate value of 5 mm and adjusting it according to the extrusion system and the occurrence of stringing between separate areas.
  • Perform an extrusion test before printing final parts to check that the wood particles flow correctly through the nozzle and that no clogging occurs.
  • Dry the filament before use and, whenever possible, print directly from a dry box. Afterwards, store it in a dry, dark place with humidity below 15 %, protected from sunlight and direct heat.
  • Avoid storing the filament exposed to moisture for prolonged periods. The presence of natural fibres and moisture absorption can affect extrusion stability and surface finish.
  • Bear in mind that wood particles may show slight colour variations between batches. These variations are part of the material's natural appearance and may result in each part having a slightly different finish.
  • Take advantage of the good machinability of BioFil Wood for post-processing operations such as sanding, drilling, bonding, painting or varnishing. First perform a test on a non-visible area to determine the most suitable finish.
  • Design parts taking into account the filament's high wood content and avoid geometries that require excessively fine extrusion or a very low material flow.
  • Clean the nozzle after prolonged printing sessions and periodically check that the outlet diameter is free from blockages or particle build-up.
  • Store the filament at an approximate temperature of 18-25 °C, protected from moisture, sunlight and direct heat sources.
