The hotend thermistor is an NTC temperature sensor installed in the hot zone of the extruder in Elegoo Neptune 4 series printers. Its main function is to accurately measure the temperature of the melt zone, allowing the motherboard to control and regulate the heating of the cartridge to maintain stable thermal conditions during printing.

Thermistors used in this series are typically characterized by a negative temperature coefficient and a 100 KΩ resistance at 25 °C, meaning their resistance decreases as the temperature rises. This characteristic allows the printer electronics to interpret resistance changes as temperature variations within the hotend’s operating range.

The thermistor is generally placed in the hotend block, very close to the nozzle, to capture the most representative reading of the filament’s melt temperature. Maintaining the correct temperature is crucial for uniform filament flow and print quality, and a faulty thermistor can produce erratic readings, trigger printer shutdown for safety, or cause extrusion defects.

Typical thermistor specifications in this series allow measurement of temperatures up to 300 °C, more than covering the range required for most filaments used in FDM printers, such as PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, and nylon. Accurate temperature monitoring through the thermistor is essential to ensure stable thermal control, prevent temperature errors, and protect both the hotend and the material from overheating or unexpected cooling that could compromise print quality or printer safety.
